The Undercover Spy Lab

In this lab, we examine a site that has been sold and see how we can replicate the results (without all the guesswork.)

The Site – GoMechanicalKeyboard.com

Flippa Listing - https://flippa.com/8497895-gomechanicalkeyboard-com

Date Sold - 22nd June 2017

Price Sold For - $15,000

Age of Site When Sold – 2 years

Details – This sale is an interesting one. The owner bought it originally for $47,500 and then it declined rapidly in earnings and rankings. So he did nothing with it and eventually sold it again for $15,000. But goes to show that even declining Amazon sites are still in huge demand.

It promotes mechanical keyboards and has around 115 articles on the site which are monetized through Amazon.

Keywords Targeted – It targeted all types of mechanical keyboard keywords.

Backlinks – The site has 949 backlinks from 137 referring domains according to MajesticSEO. These links are a combination of donation sites and directories.

What My Plan Would Be To Clone The Results – I would set up a brand new site using a domain name that has 'keyboards' within it. I would then create 1,000 word content posts that target relevant keywords and place Amazon native ads on each page. I would most likely need to have 100+ posts on the site to become more of an authority in the niche but these can be added on an ongoing basis.

Potential keywords I would target:

mechanical keyboard

mechanical keyboards

best mechanical keyboard

wireless mechanical keyboard

mechanical gaming keyboard

cheap mechanical keyboard

what is a mechanical keyboard

ergonomic mechanical keyboard

cheapest mechanical keyboard

mechanical keyboard guide

backlit mechanical keyboard

quiet mechanical keyboard

and other related keywords found during research.

I would use social, Web 2.0 and PBN links to rank the site over the course of 12+ months. I would heavily focus on getting topically related and thematically related backlinks..

The aim would be to get to $1,000+ per month in profit and then sell for $20,000+

The Sniper Lab

The Sniper Lab is all about creating small 3-5 page websites that target buyer keywords with an Exact Match Domain (EMD).

You simply browse the Amazon marketplace to find products, then put those into the Google keyword planner and see what searches come up. Find one that gets 250+ searches a month that has a .com available domain and you're good to go!

You can use a free keyword tool like this one to get more accurate search volumes than the Google keyword planner now gives you.

These are really simple sites to make and each can make you 4 figures in profit when you sell them. They make great additions to add to your Amazon empire.

Here are some domains you can use right now (each one is available as I'm typing this and has a clean history):

whitemechanicalkeyboard.com – 720 searches/month
backlitmechanicalkeyboard.com – 720 searches/month
quietmechanicalkeyboard.com – 720 searches/month
macmechanicalkeyboard.com – 590 searches/month
laptopwithmechanicalkeyboard.com – 590 searches/month
bestcheapmechanicalkeyboard.com – 480 searches/month
mechanicalkeyboardlaptop.com – 480 searches/month
bestmechanicalgamingkeyboard.com – 390 searches/month
compactmechanicalkeyboard.com – 390 searches/month
silentmechanicalkeyboard.com – 390 searches/month

These will obviously be snapped up fast by members but give you an idea of what to look for. A new list will be added every month.

The Ranking Lab

Testing The Duplicate Content 'Myth'

(1,000 pages indexed and 20+ page 1 Google rankings in 10 days)

Whilst I tend to stick to traditional affiliate marketing, I do sometimes like to test other methods that can be expanded. So I thought I would run a test on a hybrid method of affiliate marketing mixed with local rank and rent.

I had this domain name - http://www.robertgearyddsandassociates.com/ - which I had previously used as a PBN but it wasn't really needed for that any longer. I bought it as an expired domain and it used to be a real dentist's website.

So I figured, why not make a site that is somewhat dentist related that I can also monetize with an affiliate program and also rent the pages to local dentists. I decided that teeth whitening was the way to go. Clickbank has a good offer for it and I can also contact dentists in the areas that offer the treatment and see if they want to rent my pages and show their website instead.

I decided to start with the state of Texas and got together all 1,000 city names in a file. I then ordered one 500 word article on teeth whitening.

Putting the site together took less than an hour. I used a free plugin that Alex Becker gives away called Source Flood (Google it and you should find a download). It basically just creates duplicate pages but replaces the city name from a list you supply. So there are more than 1,000 pages that just have 1-5 words of difference. I'm also using his SourceCCS software which displays a bottom banner asking if anyone wants to rent the page.

The site was built and I pinged it. It got indexed very quickly and currently has more than 1,000 pages indexed in Google. What was interesting was this:

More than 20 page 1 rankings in Google in 10 days. I'm only tracking about 200 cities, so likely there are dozens more.

To sum up – duplicate content is still liked by Google for local websites and there is still a big opportunity to make a lot of money with it.

The Q and A Lab

Questions that have been sent in this month:

Q – Are mass link builders still effective?

A – Not really. The only mass links I get these days are social backlinks and citations if I'm ranking a local website. These links will be branded links only (like the main URL only and no keyword anchor text). I start every new site with these links.

I would not recommend getting any links these days that aren't related to your sites topic and where you can't add any keywords into the title or URL of the backlink.

Q – What is the ideal on-page keyword percentage for my website?

A – These days, there is no ideal ideal recommendation for a certain percentage. If you have your keyword in your URL, title and on the page somewhere at least once then you're good to go. Just focus on getting themed and related backlinks instead.

Q – How important are image ALT tags?

A – I actually rarely use them and don't find they help much at all. Once you could keyword stuff them with lots of keywords but Google has picked up on that. I generally just add a description of what the image is about and don't think about keywords.

Q – My site is taking ages to rank, any tips?

A – Google has such a good algorithm these days that it's natural that new sites will take a while to climb the rankings. That's why most people get fed up and give up or even worse start sending more links when you might not even need them. Just focus on sending links as laid out in Zon Boot Camp and you'll eventually see the climb. Links can take up to 6 months to fully kick in, so have patience but don't give up.
